Venice Inspirations

Venice is an amazing city with artistic delights at every turn. It truly was astonishing to see this city on water and to observe how it functions. Most of my fabric design ideas came from inspiration found at Basilica San Marco and Doge's Palace.  My Venice colors were taken from the photos I took. As I worked with these colors they developed into three color stories; blue/gold, terracotta/green and pink/royal. Below you will find  groups of designs in each color story. Each group ends with a quilt or two designed with fabrics from it's color story.

Blue/Gold Color Story

Lions are a symbol of Venice and St Mark. Statues of them are found everywhere.

Estonian Inspired Designs

I was most impressed with Estonian hand crafts, called
käsitöö. These took the form of embroidery, knits, woven goods, woodwork and ironwork.
Embroidered coif wedding hats inspired the first 6 fabric designs below.

The traditional outfit for women to wear to weddings and on holidays is a woven skirt of a red stripe, knitted socks, a white tunic with embroidery and a scarf of a floral red print.

Long ago grooms and brides were given beer steins at the reception made of wood and carved with horses and wheels to symbolize strength and everlasting love.

Three small prints in two colorways.

Estonians are proud of their weather vanes. They can be seen from most of the tall buildings in Tallinn.

Iron work was prevalent on gates and balconies.

Two quilts designed with Estonian prints.
